Public Interest

photos that are in the public interest are images that fall into the following: detecting or exposing crime, protecting public health and safety, protect the public from being misled, disclosing failure or likely failure to comply with any obligations, disclosing a miscarriage of justice, raising or contributing to a matter of public debate, and disclosing concealment or likely concealment of any of these.

The image below can be seen as in the public interest, the image is of a man wearing a mask and gloves, with mural of an NHS worker in a mask behind him. The image promotes the NHS positively as well as showing a good example of someone wearing PPE (personal protective equipment). Not only does this photo promote public health and safety but it raises awareness to the NHS and wearing PPE which could fall under contributing to a matter of public debate as there are people who do not believe in wearing PPE in the covid19 pandemic.

The next image is in the publics interest to bring awareness to and protest racial injustice as well as police brutality. It shows a man being knelt on by law enforcement after protesting the shooting of alton sterling. It shines light on racism within the police as well as unnecessarily brutal ways they use to detain people, this is in the publics interest to disclose a miscarriage of justice and more recently to contribute to a matter of public debate in the black lives matter movement.
