day 1

Writer's picture: Henry WeekesHenry Weekes

For the first day of my 30 day challenge I decided to revisit one of my favourite locations in cheltenham, the abandoned trains. With the intention of shooting punchy black and white photos. I went late in the day after the sun had set and used long exposures to create these images, I also used a phone torch to add a bit of fill in light to images four and five.

For the first two images my ideas were obvious, I wanted to use the train tracks to lead your eye through both of the images and I also liked the contrast of the light stone and the darker metal rails. The second image is shot into a dark tunnel and I like the effect this gives as your focus is directly on the carriage and small patch of graffiti and you don't get lost in all the other things hiding in the tunnel.

The third image is a pair for the second image as I wanted the graffiti to be more prominent in the image. I also like the contrast of shape in this one of the round tunnel and round bumper with the square train carriage. I shot head on to the train so that I had a straight edge through the photo to break the frame up, this also allowed for the best view of the graffiti.

In images four and five I played around using a torch to paint bits of light into the image. in the first shot the light was coming from a single point and I used it to light up the part of the carriage that was broken and where it had fallen into the other train. I like this image however I thought there was too much black so for the second shot I introduced a second point of light to highlight both train carriages and create an overall more balanced exposure.
